Hardware, add-ons, chargebacks and taxes are not included. Toast quotes each restaurant, so its rates here are the ones independents commonly report, not a quote.
How the math works
- Card sales ÷ average ticket = card transactions per year.
- In-person fees = in-person sales × the percentage, plus in-person transactions × the per-sale fee. Keyed and online sales use their own rate the same way.
- Software = the monthly fee × 12, per location or per station.
- Per year = processing + software. Plans are sorted cheapest first.
Example: $1.2 million in card sales at a $30 ticket is 40,000 transactions. On 2.49% + $0.15 that is $29,880 + $6,000 = $35,880 in processing a year. Our Toast vs SpotOn guide walks through this example plan by plan.
Where the rates come from
SpotOn and Square publish their rates, and the figures here are from their 2026 pricing pages. Toast quotes each restaurant; the Toast rates are the ones reviewers report for the $0 Starter Kit (from 3.09% + $0.15) and the $69 Point of Sale plan. Your quote can be lower or higher, and processors can change rates during a contract, so get the rate and any right to raise it in writing.
